Big Freo Spring Clean Set to Launch a New Tradition of Civic Care

The good folk behind Good Fund Freo are asking a simple question: What if caring for our city became a community tradition?

On Saturday 12 September, Good Fund Freo is inviting the Fremantle community to come together for the inaugural Big Freo Spring Clean — a morning dedicated not just to tidying our streets, but to celebrating the simple act of caring for the places we share.

Presented in partnership with the Fremantle Foundation, City of Fremantle, Fremantle Men’s Shed, and a host of local residents and businesses, the event begins at 9am in Horatio’s Lane, behind Gino’s. From there, volunteers will head out across central Fremantle to refresh precincts, laneways and public spaces.

Participants are encouraged to bring tongs, gloves, cleaning spray, rubbish bags and plenty of positivity. Prizes will be awarded to the most enthusiastic participants, and HC Urban Winery will support the day with beverage tokens.

A highlight will be the community‑powered transformation of the long‑vacant Hungry Jacks site. Local urban‑renewal group SPACEMRKT has recently secured access to the building, and many hands will be working inside and out to breathe life back into the neglected space.

“Cities don’t become great because someone else looks after them,” said Sarah Booth of Good Fund Freo.

“They become great because we decide to commit to them — especially when it feels the most challenging to do so. Every cigarette butt picked up, every tag removed, every window cleaned, and every shopfront cared for sends an important message: we love our home. We hope the Big Freo Spring Clean becomes an annual tradition that celebrates civic pride and reminds us all that looking after Freo is something we can do together.”

The Big Freo Spring Clean is open to everyone — residents, businesses, families, sporting clubs, schools and community groups. Whether you can spare thirty minutes or the whole morning, every pair of hands will help make a visible difference and strengthen Fremantle’s culture of care.
