Interview with Brendan Hutchens – The VAM Man

Brendan Hutchens is the creative force behind Fremantle-based production company VAM MEDIA. And he’s a nice guy, to boot.

Brendan’s life before VAM was as an ABC TV employee for 12 years, starting out as a bright-eyed mailroom guy and then working his way up through many roles in television, and working with icons like George Negus, before eventually series-producing iconic national TV programs like triple j tv and rage.

These days he’s a well known multi-skilled doco maker with a strong understanding of all facets of production. He excels as a Series Producer and Shooter/Director with a flair for new concept development and getting to the heart of a story.

Recently, Brendan has come to great attention as the genius behind the new Disney+ series, SHIPWRECK HUNTERS AUSTRALIA, that recently premiered in Fremantle.

Before that, Brendan’s work included the half hour documentary Drawn to Water for ABC TV Arts, a 3 x one hour documentary series titled Testing Teachers for SBS, a 5 x 8 minute short series called On Assignment for ABC iview, the ground breaking web series Density by Design, and the ABC feature Walking Man about the artist Ross Seaton.

Brendan has also directed a shark documentary for Discovery Channel and been the WA based field director for long running ABC program Gardening Australia.

We were so pleased when Brendan Hutchens agreed to take time out to make this podcast with our editor, Michael Barker, talking about doco making in Freo, how he got to where he is today, and what it is about Freo that has creatives in his field teeming the streets! It’s a great story.
