It started innocently enough. A pint of Little Dove at The Local on South Terrace, South Fremantle followed by a plate of melting pasta across the road at Ruocco’s.
Matters took a dark turn when my beloved upped from the table mid-mouthful and strode purposefully across the road towards the alluring neon lights of one of Fremantle’s newest enterprises.
She returned a full five minutes later having inspected, seemingly in fine detail, the automatic spray tanning machine at Glo Getter, which had commenced trading that very evening.
Question whether what followed was bullying, cajoling, daring or instructing, but shortly after I was standing starkers inside said tanning machine, first of its type in WA apparently, luxuriating in an opening night special.
Caught up in the moment, I took the ‘Double Dark’ option from a list of six, throwing caution to the wind and kinda interested whether my winter pallor might be replaced by something more St Tropez.
I wasn’t disappointed, emerging within minutes looking like I had spent six months on the beach. So dark, in fact, that it prompted uncontrollable laughter among nearest and dearest for a full five days until the glow started to fade.
Was it worth it? Unequivocally yes, if only for the Scarlett Johansson lookalike next door generously saying I’d never looked better. But mostly for the abundant and hysterical laughter.
