A good night had by all at Freo.Social!
My jazz knowledgable friend and I responded positively to the invitation of Fever to be at The Jazz Room at Freo.Social on Thursday night last to celebrate two of the most influential musicians of all time: Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong.
As promised, we got to experience the timeless music of these two guys as reimagined by Jake Dennis and his talented live band in a great setting.

While my jazz knowledgeable friend questioned whether Old Blue Eyes was strictly a jazz man, I have to say I loved Jake’s rendition of Fly Me to the Moon and What a Wonderful World. My Way, the French song Comme d’habitude adapted by songwriter Paul Anker into English, was also a big winner on the night. (And it wasn’t even a funeral!)
As to the talented live band, well they were just that. Ben Anderson (double bass), Tierryno Gangou (keyboard), Tom Grebel (saxophone) and Richard Pooley (drums). My jazz knowledgeable friend said to mention she was particularly blown away by the saxophone player’s work! (There I’ve said it!) Me? The keyboard guy was amazing. But so too were the drummer and the bass player!

And up front, creating all the magic with the mic and the smooth moves, was the irrepressible Jake Dennis who made the audience quite misty eyed when he related to us all toward the end of the set that he was returning to the stage after a seven year break from WA’s music scene to focus on poetry and take care of his wife who was then recovering from illness.
If you can make it to The Jazz Room you won’t be disappointed, especially if you can arrange to be there when Jake and his band are performing.
The Freo.Social setting is great. A good bar. And you can order food as well.
My jazz knowledgeable friend and I each enjoyed a Negroni during the concert and later found our way down a Freo backstreet where we discovered a great bar and eats place, Strange Company where we discussed this review. Well, just for a short time, before we debated, I mean discussed, the etiquette of clapping at various types of concerts and laughing out loud at movies. We have reserved our rights to continue the debate – oops, discussion.
One thing’s for sure though, we look forward to returning to The Jazz Room at Freo.Social.
