Fine Photography – Roel Loopers

Not so long ago, we inaugurated Fine Photography on the Shipping News to honour local and Fremantle connected photographers of note.

Each feature displays a gallery of their work, chosen by them, and a podcast of our discussion with them about their careers, their work and the photos selected. It all makes for fascinating viewing and listening.

Look here to meet the fine photographers we have featured to date.

Not long ago we made a podcast with Roel Loopers in which he told his story about growing up in The Hague, The Netherlands, taking his first job as a photojournalist/press photographer in Nuremberg, Germany – then West Germany, before finding his way to Australia and eventually to Fremantle where he has lived these past 33 years.

Roel has worked as a commercial photographer over his time in Australia and since 2009, has also published his blog, Freo View, in which much of his Freo ‘street photography’ can be found.

We were pleased to invite Roel Loopers to identify 20 or so images he has a special affinity with and then to sit down with our Editor, Michael Barker, to discuss each.

Here are the images. You will find the podcast discussion of them below, at the very foot of this post.
