Dear Editor,
I went to the yawn-fest of the mayoral debate and I’m none the wiser. As Mark Naglazas suggested in his piece, you couldn’t run a piece of paper between the five candidates.
I want a mayor who is scrupulously honest, pushes back at the state and federal governments instead of accepting their dictums just because they’re Labor, and who works hard for their $100,000-plus salary.
I’m not interested in the Freo nightlife. I’m interested in the efficient running of Freo with the best use of our rates, particularly in increasing mature tree coverage in this very hot – and getting hotter – city. I’m interested in a mayor who will not build ridiculous eyesores such as FOMO. Why was that built? What is its purpose? I’m baffled, because I go to the Freo library often and there is absolutely no one there…
It’s a shame the debate was so weak, because by the mere fact that they wouldn’t challenge each other, not one candidate stood out for their tenacity and willingness to fight for residents honestly and openly.
Yours truly,
Julie Zilko
