Fremantle will see a special celebration at Bathers Beach this Saturday afternoon, 10 December to mark 75 years since the Declaration of International Human Rights.
From 3pm to 6.30pm, Fremantle Grandmothers for Refugees will join at the beach with the Fremantle Refugee Rights Action Network and Fremantle Amnesty International to highlight the plight of refugees and asylum seekers in Australia.
They will set up an installation to represent refugees and asylum seekers, including hundreds who have spent many years in offshore mandatory detention. There will also be booths where you can write a personal message to asylum seekers and refugees, who do not share internationally recognised rights and freedoms, including to work and study.
Fremantle residents and visitors are invited to take time out to write a message of support and have their photo taken with their message. They can also sign a petition, find out more information or just come past for a chat.
The United Nations was formed shortly after World War II to protect the rights and freedom of all people. Its Universal Declaration of Human Rights, declaring that everyone should be treated equally and with respect, was published in 1948. Australia was one of eight nations involved in drafting the convention.
