Sand Returns to Port

Sand nourishment works underway at Port Beach

If you’ve been near Leighton and Port beaches this last week, you’ll have seen temporary fencing and exclusion zones, earth movers working on the beaches, and trucks moving sand south along Curtin Avenue. It’s all part of a process of sand nourishment at Port Beach.

The City of Fremantle is trucking 4,000 cubic metres of sand from northern Leighton Beach, adjacent to the Leighton pedestrian overpass near McCabe Street, to Pocket Beach and Sandtrax Beach at the southern end of Port Beach, to nourish the sand the Beach has lost to erosion.

The sand from northern Leighton Beach being sent to Port Beach is sand that has built up over time after drifting north from Port each winter. The Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure recommended back-passing as the most cost-effective way to restore beach width at Port, to be repeated every 1-3 years.

As well, in 2021 and 2023, 150,000 cubic metres of dredged sand from the Fremantle Ports Deepwater Channel was placed at Port Beach as part of a sand nourishment project, helping with dune creation and stabilisation works.

Port Beach was named WA’s top coastal erosion hotspot in a 2019 State government assessment. We have brought you many reports over the past number years of years about the problem, like this most recent one.

Beach goers note: working hours as the replenishment works go on, are 7am to 4pm, Monday to Friday. Works are expected to be completed by this coming Friday, 13 November. Eighteen car bays at the southern end of the Leighton Beach carpark are inaccessible during working hours.
