11 on the trot
‘Beware the wounded Lion’ wrote the dreary old cliché merchants.
‘Never more dangerous’ apparently than after last weekend’s humiliating loss to GWS.
You won’t be surprised to learn Justin Longmuir asked me to do some research into the subject, so I looked up what one should do when in the company of an injured big cat.
The first suggestion was that you don’t run. Because even when injured they can apparently, run faster than you.

Jordy Clark and I agreed that blokes like Lachy Neale are as slow as a wet week these days, so he ignored that advice and spent the entire afternoon nonchalantly purring clear of their hopeless chase.
In all he gave Freo 666 devilish metres of line breaking advantage.
Studying an old episode of Daktari – sorry readers under the age of 60 – it also became evident that all Freo had to do was stay alert in the Lions habitat, travel in groups and stand tall to make themselves appear as big as possible.
No problem there. Today our big men cast very long and intimidating shadows.
Jye Amis kicked four in another cool and assertive performance. Pat Voss, who when he wasn’t putting his head in his opponent’s mouth to show how brave he was, also kicked four and Josh Treacy three.
Eleven goals between them. If not for wayward kicking it could have been fifteen, such was their dominance. Voss was particularly fierce and capable today.
I’m not sure if I’ve ever used the word ‘exquisite’ to describe the quality of Freo’s footy – to be fair, there hasn’t been a lot of it in recent years – but let’s write it in capitals today – because some of the delivery to our big forwards was EXQUISITE. Shai, Driz, Jordy et al … it’s becoming a real feature of our excellent transition game.
Freo banged on four goals in about five minutes during the third quarter to break it wide open. None of them more exhilarating than Jacko winning the tap in the middle and going on one of his unstoppable rampaging runs.
Six goals for the quarter and at one stage the lead had blown out to 51 points.
What did Brisbane have? Nothing.
Indeed at one point in the last term, their Pressure Factor was at 128 which I’m reliably informed is two points lower than an elderly man offering a weak handshake of condolence at a funeral for someone he doesn’t like.
The Freo defenders did a superb job, particularly as Brennan Cox was subbed out with an injured knee at half time and Alex looked proppy late in the game. Morris and Lohmann are both really dangerous forwards, but they kicked just one goal between them.
Charlie Cameron annoyed with a couple of versions of ‘Take Me Home, Country Roads’ and yes, the Lions again managed some junk time goals, but with the absolute relief of hindsight, they were never a real threat.
Freo home by 25 points and now winners of their last eleven games. Waiting for them in the rooms – and to their great delight – the champ Nat Fyfe.
Next week we’re off to Bunbury for an away game against North Melbourne. It’s a funny old world.
Oh and well-done Josh Treacy for that brilliant run-down tackle and holding the ball free kick against Cam Rayner who you might remember was given a thousand dollar fine for diving last week, which frankly suggests a major character flaw.
Well today he tried to start a fight with Andy Brayshaw which just confirmed it.
The Lions weren’t so much wounded today as woeful and while some hack has probably already written his very pleased with himself headline of “Freo Tames Lions” …
Why don’t we finish with a bit of a song. I think you know it.
A-weema-weh, a-weema-weh,
a-weema-weh, a-weema-weh
A-weema-weh, a-weema-weh,
a-weema-weh, a-weema-weh
In the jungle, the mighty jungle
The lions (were put to) sleep tonight.
