Our Editor, Michael Barker caught up with the Mayor of Fremantle, Ben Lawver yesterday to find out how he has enjoyed his first 6 months mayoring and to discuss some of the most talked about issues around Freo. You’ll find the podcast interview at the foot of this post.

After opening pleasantries, discussion soon turned to hot button issues like the proposed new town planning scheme, the question of West End heritage protection, the timeless topic of retail activation in the CBD, more and better CBD lighting at night, the removal of the Moreton Bay Fig near the intersection of South Terrace and Douro Road in South Freo, pedestrian access thereabouts to South Beach, The Bridge, North Fremantle more generally, the future of the Port, the Future of Fremantle north of the Port, whether the State Government might grant some of that land to the Whadjuk Noongar traditional owners, the growth and scourge of Convenience Stores, homelessness and affordable housing options, making life easier for cyclists and more besides.
