It’s hard to believe that, after all this time, 1 February 2026, has finally arrived and the Old Fremantle Traffic Bridge is now closed to traffic. Hopefully, by year’s end the replacement Fremantle Traffic Bridge will be open and usher in a new Fremantle era. Today, a lucky assembly of well-wishers enjoyed a tour of the Old Bridge and the emerging new bridge on the last bus to Freo!
At Fremantle Railway Station a dot or two after 9.15 am this morning, an assorted assembly of Old Fremantle Traffic Bridge well-wishers and Old Bridge tragics, as well as replacement bridge admirers, led by a beaming Deputy Premier Rita Saffioti, who is also the State’s Treasurer, Minister for Transport and Minister for Sport and Recreation, and happy as Fremantle MLA Simone McGurk, boarded three Bridge bound buses.
The assembly’s aim was variously to shed a tear or two on the occasion of the formal closure of The Old Bridge, and to be impressed with the fab civil engineering feat that the replacement Fremantle Traffic Bridge represents and to admire some of its bells and whistles.

Here’s Rita and Simone, Bridge bound
And here’s a gallery of events on the Bridge.

And just to prove he was there, here’s a pic of the Editor of Fremantle Shipping News mingling with some of the cool kids on the Bridge today!
