Fremantle Shipping News is pleased to bring you The Wednesday Poem.
In this feature we post poems by Freo and Freo-connected poets and those who may not call themselves poets but love writing poetry or having a go!
Today, we are pleased to bring you Australia Day One by Tony London.
AUSTRALIA DAY ONE
[Recollections of a migrant child 1952]

By Tony London
*Tony London’s first day in Fremantle was when he stepped off a boat from England in 1952. However, he continued on to ‘the East’ until, in 1971, he moved permanently to Western Australia to live and became emotionally attached to Fremantle. So much so that Tony was a foundation member of the Fremantle Dockers AFL Football Club and even coached one of their players as a junior. And when Fremantle magazines such as Artlook and Patterns were printed, Tony was represented. While he now lives on the South Coast, Tony still has many Freo friends. And they will all relate to this very Freo poem.
