Brutto or Bella? Good or evil? Rich or poor? Or fertile? Darling, we’ve only just met. Buy me a drink first.
Yours truly sauntered along to the launch of the Secrets of Carnevale photo exhibition launch last Saturday evening to pore over photographs of the 3000-year old history of Carnevale in Europe and endeavour to take some snaps of her own of the fantastic characters on display at the Buffalo Club. Many wonderful conversations, laughs, and hugs were had. All amidst the bevvies and groovy tunes by Junkadelic and The Dudes of Grace. What a night!

“‘Carnevale in the Italian Countryside’ focuses on Carnival in three towns of Southern Italy and five towns in Northern Italy, in an attempt to present the universal themes of Carnival, but also the wide range of regional variation in the traditional Carnival in the Italian countryside.”

Stephen Bennetts let us know that Calabrian ethnographer Angelo Maggio’s spectacular exhibition of Carnevale images from the small towns of Southern Italy and the Northern Italian Alps has been extended until Sunday 23 November 2025 at the Buffalo Club, 54 High Street, Fremantle.
The fantastic exhibition can be viewed from Tuesday-Sunday 12-5pm alongside the equally fantastic exhibition of beloved local artist Horatio T Birdbath by Vittorio Natoli.

To learn more about the origins of Carnevale, don’t miss the talk by anthropologist Dr Stephen Bennetts this Saturday 15th November 2025 12pm which features excerpts from the documentary ‘Carnival King of Europe’.
Buon Carnevale!
