The creation of Lefroy, a large residential and commercial development, is underway with civil works commencing on the former Beaconsfield Challenger TAFE site.
The 14-hectare Lefroy precinct comprises of the former Beaconsfield Challenger TAFE and the adjacent Davis Park precinct.
Here’s the old TAFE site and the adjacent much larger Davis Park precinct – and an artist’s impression of what’s happening there soon under State Government and DevelopmentWA plans.

The old TAFE site will deliver up to 155 new dwellings, just 2.5 kilometres from Fremantle and South Beach. The site will feature a range of housing options including apartments and homesites sized up to 420 square metres.

This image is of course an artist’s impression.
The first lots are anticipated to be released for sale by the end of this year, with titles late 2026.
Coinciding with development at the old TAFE site, the ongoing demolition program of old social housing stock in the Davis Park precinct continues, to be replaced with 110 modern social and affordable dwellings, greatly revitalising the area.
In addition, three major commercial lots have just been released on the corner of South Street and Fifth Avenue, to create the the ‘Lefroy Neighbourhood Centre’.
The Lefroy Neighbourhood Centre is designed to deliver a significant amount of new amenity, and could feature a supermarket, specialty retail, café and medical services.
It will also be a mixed use site delivering up to 170 dwellings, including a minimum of 30 social housing units within a medium to high-density residential development of up to six storeys.
On completion, the developments are expected to deliver up to 700 dwellings across a mix of low and mid-rise apartments and townhouses with up to 20 per cent affordable and social housing.
The overall aim is to create a modern, inclusive neighbourhood within the Beaconsfield community.
Enhanced public open spaces and improved pedestrian connectivity to foster strong integration with the existing community will be key features.
The design will retain mature trees and promote sustainable and innovative built form outcomes.
Here’s the DevelopmentWA timeline for the works that are underway.

In terms of what’s to come, on its website DevelopmentWA says –
Integrating both the former Beaconsfield Challenger TAFE site and the Davis Park precinct, this exciting transformation will take place in stages, with completion expected over the next ten years.
Planning and Lands Minister John Carey and Fremantle MLA Simone McGurk were justifiably upbeat when they helped turn the first sods on the Lefroy development with DevelopmentWA head honchos. Here they are (L to R) Natalie Clayforth DevelopmentWA Development Manager, Simone McGurk Member for Fremantle , John Carey Minister for Lands, Stuart Gardiner DevelopmentWA General Manager Metropolitan, and Isabelle Nunn DevelopmentWA Assistant Development Manager. (Judging by their shine, we don’t think those shovels have seen a lot of action – yet!)

Mr Carey said –
“The start of civil works at the former TAFE site is a major step forward in the creation of Lefroy – a development that will deliver more affordable housing and revitalise the precinct.
“We’re delivering well-planned infill that is boosting housing supply and ensuring new residents have access to services and amenity.
“The revitilised precinct will reflect the unique history, charm and character Beaconsfield holds, while providing much needed housing opportunities within walking distance of Fremantle.”
Simone McGurk added –
“Anyone who knows the suburb of Beaconsfield knows it is a great community and contains prime real estate. That’s why I’m excited to see the revitalisation of the old Beaconsfield TAFE site progress with the start of civil works.
“This development, along with the renewal of the Davis Park precinct, will provide more housing options for locals, and those that want to be locals, and create a well-serviced new community within Beaconsfield.”
So there we are, no longer part Beacy, or Davis Park it seems, but now Lefroy!
