As everyone around Freo knows, the first sod has been turned and construction of the new bridge is officially underway.
Without doubt, the new bridge, which incorporates cantilevers and cable support, will create a striking gateway to Walyalup, across the Derbarl Yerrigan.
Extended closure of a small section of Beach Street beneath the bridge will be required.
Main Roads WA have advised that to provide a safe environment for the wider community and their workforce during construction, this extended closure is required.
The closure also enables safe access and egress for construction vehicles transporting materials and plant to the site, including two cranes over 10 metres wide and weighing 320-480 tonne, and allows space for the temporary jetties to be constructed on the south-east and south-west of the existing bridge.
Access will be maintained to the businesses and carpark on Beach Street, east of the bridge.
When: Until project completion (estimated late 2026).
Travel changes: Vehicles and pedestrians travelling to and from Fremantle will be detoured via East Street and Canning Highway.
