We recently featured, in our FREO TODAY department, a pic of an old fishing boat in Fishing Boat Harbour with the caption, Obviously seen better days!
We didn’t have a name for her, just a fishing boat licence number emblazoned on her side.
Well, mystery solved and her past reimagined!
Our regular reader John Adderley, who likes to keep himself busy sketching and painting when not thinking about the future of Freo, wrote to us advising –
Saw your photo of the derelict fishing boat in last FSN.
I think she’s named ‘Atlantic Ocean’ (for reasons that escape me! …. the one that got away?)
I painted a picture of her (re-imagined fishing at sea), a few years ago.
Another of the dero fishing boats, the ‘Jens Einar’ of Namsos (Norway), is tied up close to the ‘Atlantic Ocean’. I also painted a picture of her.
I’ve wandered down to that outer wharf regularly over the years and seen the gradual disintegration of the rusty old fishing boats moored there. Must be a few stories about them. If only they could tell their tales?
Here are John’s wonderful paintings of the two boats.
Do drop us a line if you know more. We’d love to hear from you!
And thanks, John.
