Lucky Oceans is a name synonymous with music in Western Australia. One of the most influential steel guitarists of his generation he has played with big names in Australian music across jazz, folk, blues and country and the much-loved Zydecats in Fremantle. He brings his special brand of musical magic to Kidogo Arthouse, on the shore of the Indian Ocean at Bathers Beach Fremantle on Wednesday evenings and two Sundays from November to early January.
This concert series features Lucky playing in a variety of bands featuring a mix of musical styles including Gypsy Jazz, Western Swing, Barrelhouse Blues, Irish music, Hawaiian and New Classical. Lucky will be playing with a variety of guest artists including Jeff Lang, Dave Brewer, Fiona Rea, Gemma Turvey, Jessie James Gordon, Paul Gioia, Bill Lawrie, Sam Lemann, Adam Gare. Singer Songwriter Rose Parker and David Hyams with the Miles to Go Trio will guest when Lucky is in the U.S. headlining the Pedal Steel Guitar Association’s Annual Convention.
This inaugural concert series has grown out of Lucky’s twenty-year friendship with Kidogo Arthouse owner Joanna Robertson. In 2017 Lucky held free jam sessions on the deck of Kidogo during the summer that were fun for the musicians and the people who discovered them. In January 2018 his ‘Gaelic Gumbo’ a mash up of Irish music and Louisiana Grooves, was a hit of the Fenians Festival that Joanna co-founded
“This is a venue where you feel the closeness of nature – the soothing sea, the howling wind or the glorious sunsets and the sounds of Fremantle at work – the nearby freight train and the ships leaving the harbour. It’s a magical creative and gathering space that Joanna has nurtured through her own love of a great session over all,” said Lucky.
“Having presented a wide range of music on the Daily Planet on Radio National for over 20 years, I wanted to bring the same breadth to my programming for this series, while stretching myself and making new musical partnerships. There’s also a warm sense of community at the concerts, with the sense that we are all sharing something intimate and special, in tune with Fremantle’s embrace of down-to-earth arts.
“Kidogo Arthouse’s remarkable acoustics and stunning deck setting are legendary amongst Perth’s musicians. Many comment that their performances at Kidogo are one of the standouts of their career. These concerts are the perfect combination of Kidogo’s famous ambience and Lucky’s ability to craft outstanding musical experiences,” said Joanna
