Prefabricated build delivers 38 social homes in North Coogee

For a change, a good news housing story – Thirty-eight new social housing apartments have been completed in North Coogee eight months ahead of schedule, using prefabricated construction methods to speed up delivery.

The $23.5 million project was jointly funded by the Cook and Albanese Labor Governments, with the apartments completed in 14 months by Western Australian businesses PARC Developments and Tyrone Group.

The development includes 2 studio, 12 one-bedroom and 24 two-bedroom apartments, with tenants expected to move in later this year through a community housing provider.

Prefabricated bathroom pods and masonry wall panels were manufactured offsite while work continued at the North Coogee site, reducing construction time and disruption to nearby residents.

Tyrone Group manufactured the masonry wall panels at its Neerabup facility, supporting local jobs and strengthening WA’s advanced manufacturing industry.

Federal Member for Fremantle Josh Wilson said the project demonstrated how innovative construction methods could help deliver more housing sooner.

“Affordable housing is one of our most pressing challenges, which is why the Albanese Labor Government is making the biggest investment in social and affordable housing in a generation,” he said.

Housing and Works Minister John Carey said the project showed the benefits of looking beyond traditional building methods.

“Thanks to prefabricated components, 38 new social homes were delivered in just 14 months — eight months less than it would take using traditional construction methods,” he said.

Member for Fremantle Simone McGurk said the apartments would provide affordable housing for people in need, including seniors, single parents, people with disability and those fleeing family and domestic violence.

She said the homes were well located, close to public transport and services in the Fremantle area.

The project received support from the Albanese Government’s $2 billion Social Housing Accelerator Payment fund.

The new apartments add to more than 4,300 social homes delivered through the Cook Government’s $10.8 billion investment in housing measures since 2021.
