Gage Roads asks the Freo Community to help tell the story of a Freo icon
Former port workers, local families and Fremantle locals are being invited by Gage Roads to share memories, photographs and stories from a century of A Shed history.
For 100 years, A Shed has stood on the Fremantle waterfront, witnessing generations of workers, families, celebrations and change along one of Western Australia’s most iconic coastlines.

Now, as the historic building reaches its centenary, Gage Roads Freo is inviting the community to help uncover and celebrate the stories that have shaped A Shed over the past century.
Rather than marking the milestone with a traditional birthday celebration, the 100 Years of A Shed campaign will focus on the people behind the building, from former port workers and dockside families to locals and visitors who have created memories within its walls.

Once a working port shed at the heart of Fremantle Harbour, A Shed has evolved alongside the city itself. Today, it continues its next chapter as the home of Gage Roads Freo, welcoming thousands of locals and visitors each week to gather over great beer, food and waterfront views.

Gage Roads General Manager Glenn Smith said the campaign was an opportunity to celebrate the building’s remarkable history while ensuring the stories of those who came before are not forgotten.
“We’re incredibly lucky to call A Shed home, but we’re only a small part of its much larger story,” said Glenn.”The building has played an important role in Fremantle life for 100 years. It has seen generations of waterfront workers, families, visitors and locals pass through its doors, and we’re really keen to hear from the people who helped shape its history.”Whether you’ve worked here, have family connections to the port, remember visiting A Shed decades ago, or have old photographs tucked away in a drawer, we’d love to hear your story.”
The community call-out invites people to submit photographs, memorabilia and personal memories through a dedicated online platform, helping create a living archive of stories from across the building’s history.
Stories collected throughout the campaign will form part of a broader content series celebrating the people and moments behind A Shed, with selected stories shared across Gage Roads’ channels and in-venue heritage displays during October.
As a thank you, contributors will be invited to a special waterfront sundowner event at the end of October, bringing together generations of people connected to the building to celebrate a century of history.
Anyone with a connection to A Shed is encouraged to share their story with Gage Roads right here.
