Jean Hudson introduces you to the Woylies of Walyalup
Go no further than Courthouse Lane in Fremantle, the lane that runs between Cassias and Moon & Mary and leads to the Old Courthouse Pub.

In the Lane you will find 12 bronze Woylies sculptures.
They sit on either side of the Lane and one peeps down from a rooftop.

These bronze woylies are the work of artist Ben Jones.
The Woylie or brush tailed bettong is a small, threatened mammal native to the forests and shrub lands of Australia.
The Woylie was once abundant throughout Perth, but are now confined to a few fenced wildlife sanctuaries due to foxes, cats, and habitat destruction.
Walyalup, the Nyoongar name for Fremantle, means Place of the Woylie.
Take the kids.
There is also a lovely mosaic of ‘The Scales of Justice’, modified to incorporate a beer and wine glass and a fork. New arty Corten steel signs are now in place.

This new hospitality hub is a fabulous development by Silverleaf.
The Lane is currently my favourite lane in Freo.
And this is what a real Woylie looks like.
