Here’s some good Freo social housing news

The Fed and State Governments yesterday announced $23.54 million social housing boost for North Coogee.

Development is underway with completion expected late 2026.

The project marks the first use of commercial prefabrication masonry in Australia.

The Albanese and Cook Labor governments yesterday were pleased to share news they are delivering more homes under the Commonwealth’s $2 billion SHAP fund – the Social Housing Accelerator Payments fund – with 38 new social housing dwellings now under construction in North Coogee at 54 Reinforcement Parade.

The WA Department of Communities has entered an off-the-plan contract with PARC Developments to acquire all dwellings in the $23.54 million project, providing new homes for people on the public housing waitlist and boosting Western Australia’s social housing stock.

The development marks the first Australian use of commercial prefabrication masonry, an innovative technique that accelerates construction timelines.

Completion of the 12 one-bedroom, 24 two-bedroom, and two studio apartment development is due in late 2026, and a Community Housing Provider will then manage the well-located homes.

The Department of Communities opened a call for submission for social housing in 2024, with PARC Developments submitting their North Coogee project for consideration.

The politicians attending the announcement emphasised that Western Australia’s share of the Albanese government’s SHAP fund – totalling $209.2 million – will deliver more than 260 new social homes and ensure the refurbishment of more than 300 existing social homes across the State.

THE Federal MP for Fremantle, Josh Wilson said –

“Housing is one of our most pressing challenges and it’s why the Albanese Labor Government is driving the biggest housing plan of any Federal Government since after World War Two.

“These 38 properties will mark a new chapter for people seeking an affordable, safe and secure home. North Coogee has a lot to offer with access to the beach, easy connection to Fremantle and great new public amenities.

“These new homes form part of the Albanese Government’s efforts to build 55,000 social and affordable homes Australia-wide and adds to the 80 new homes under construction in my electorate – in Treeby, White Gum Valley and Fremantle – which are funded by the Albanese government.”

State of WA Housing and Works Minister John Carey stated –

“Our Call for Submissions process allows industry to work with the State Government to deliver more social and affordable housing, including by employing innovative construction methods.

“The $23.54 million investment from the Albanese Government through its Social Housing Accelerator Payments fund will deliver 38 more social homes in North Coogee.

“This is a great result from private industry and different levels of government working together to increase housing supply, especially for the most vulnerable in our community.

“Since 2021, our Government has invested a record $5.8 billion in housing and homelessness measures, and we have already delivered more than 3,300 social homes.”

State Member for Fremantle Simone McGurk was similarly enthused and said –

“The North Coogee development is in a fantastic location – it’s close to downtown Fremantle, shops and services, recreation spaces, a walking and cycleway that links to the metropolitan principal shared pathway network, and it is close to public transport access.

“The State Government’s housing reform has delivered more homes for West Australians, and we’re using every lever to bolster the supply of social housing, including homes in Fremantle and surrounds.

“The boost of 38 social homes in North Coogee, to the tune of $23 million, will provide new homes for people on the public housing waitlist and boost WA’s social housing stock.”

Well done to all concerned!
