South Mole reopens

As we recently predicted it would, South Mole today re-opened to public vehicles.

As regular readers know, access has been restricted to pedestrians and cyclists since March.

Fremantle Ports undertook extensive community consultation earlier this year. While there were many views expressed, it was clear most people favoured being able to drive out on the mole. Since then, Fremantle Ports, who control the area, made a number of changes on South Mole to prevent a re-occurrence of the illegal camping and anti-social behaviour which led to the original closure to vehicles.

Freo Ports say their objective is a South Mole that’s safe for all who enjoy it. To achieve that, there will be –
* more regular patrols every day,
* clearer signage, and
* new ticket machines for better managing parking breaches.

Just as before, there will still be three hours of free parking, after which a fee of $3 per hour will apply. We are told there will be a total of 6 hours parking permitted.

Freo Ports say illegal campers can expect to have their vehicles towed.

Parking bays have been clearly marked and two new ACROD bays introduced.

The toilets have also undergone maintenance.

Fremantle Ports will closely monitor the re-opening to see how the public uses South Mole in the future, so they can make other changes as necessary.

Freo Ports welcome the public’s feedback at mail@fremantleports.com.au
