The HIP Company are no strangers to Freo, or OCH – the Old Customs House – having done a few performances in the last couple of years there – ‘Bedlam’ in 2022, ‘Celtic Baroque’ and ‘Orpheus’ in 2023.

Bonnie de la Hunty From HIP tells us the acoustics at OCH work well for a chamber group like HIP, and the audiences always likes it too.

And this October, HIP Company return to OCH to present Élisabeth, a groundbreaking new production combining live historical music and contemporary dance.

Music by French Baroque composer Élisabeth Claude Jacquet de la Guerre will be performed on replicas of historical instruments from the time (soprano, Baroque violin and flute, viola da gamba, and harpsichord), and meet with contemporary Neo-Baroque dance choreographed by renowned French ballerina, Claire Voss.

De la Guerre (1665 – 1729) was a virtuoso harpsichordist and one of few well-known female composers of her time. She performed for Louis XIV at Versailles at age 5, eventually becoming a celebrated musician in his court. The centrepiece of Élisabeth is a cantata depicting a story from Ancient Greek L’Isle de Délos (The Isle of Delos).

HIP Company is an Early Music ensemble from Perth, specialising in the ‘historically informed performance’ (‘HIP’) of seventeenth and eighteenth century music. Launched in 2020, HIP made their festival debut at the Fremantle Biennale in 2021 and released their critically acclaimed debut album, Pastorales: Arias for the Open Air in the same year. They create vibrant and thought-provoking performances, combining tradition with innovation, having given concerts across Perth, regional WA and Sydney.

Élisabeth will be performed on two evenings at OCH. Two of HIP Company’s directors, Bonnie de la Hunty (soprano) and Krista Low (viola da gamba), will be joined by associate musicians Eliza McCracken (violin), James Huntingford (harpsichord), and Robin Hillier (Baroque flute), and dancers Claire Voss and Ivan Tarakanov.

The performance lasts approximately one hour and will be followed by a complimentary drinks reception sponsored by Victory Point Wines. So you must go!
