Alexandria 2.0: Songs About Books

Sound AF Productions boldly ask the question of their favourite books, and create a veritable feast of sound and music in their song cycle celebrating the written word.

A mesmerising fusion of literature, sound design & music, the audience is asked to prepare to be transported to the worlds of “Alexandria 2.0: Songs About Books.”

Some of the novels featured are –
* James and The Giant Peach (Dahl, 1961)
* Down & Out in Paris & London (Orwell, 1933)
* On the Road (Kerouac, 1957)
* Neuromancer (Gibson, 1984)
* Tomorrow, When the War Began (Marsden, 1993).

There are others too, but you are invited to come along to find out which ones make the show.

Brought to life at the iconic Victoria Hall in Fremantle, Sound AF Productions promise a memorable experience of unique compositions inspired by timeless novels, paying homage to the power of the written word, the stories they carry and the magic of music.

“This is a very different path into these stories than you might have trodden before – abstract, experimental, adventurous and ear-enveloping! I say come down and sink into this musical world, that’s living right inside these books that you no doubt already know and love!”, says Penny, an preview audience member.

You will also be intrigued to know who the creative forces behind Sound AF Productions are. Well, they are Steven McCall and David Philip-Richardson.

Steven originally hails from Glasgow, Scotland, but spent his formative years in Perth, Western Australia. He began his performance studies at the Hayman Theatre, is a graduate of the WA Screen Academy (Screenwriting) and completed post-graduate studies at NIDA (Writing for Performance). He has composed music for film, theatre, dance productions and installations since 2008 under the moniker, The Men From Another Place, alongside David Richardson. Film co-credits include TARTAN (for ABC2/ABC View), PERISHED (selected for 2012 SXSW Film Festival). Theatre co-credits include LAST TRAIN TO FREO, THE OTHER PLACE and MEAT (Fremantle Theatre Company), THE BLIND GIANT IS DANCING (WAAPA), 10000 (National Arts Festival Fringe, South Africa), DNA (WA Youth Theatre Company). He was also nominated at the 2012 Museum and Galleries National Awards (MAGNA) for the creation of an audio tour of the Subiaco Museum’s exhibition SAVING FACE. Alongside David, Kat Shaw, and Locky Wood, Steven also plays music in local band MK ULTRASOUND.
 
David initially paid his way as a carpenter before a collaboration on the short film ‘Mia’ received a WA Screen Award and encouraged him to begin studying both Screen & Sound and Secondary Education at Murdoch University. Since graduating in 2013, David has managed to balance working as an Arts specialist, rising to Head of Arts at regional Dalyellup College, with continued development as an arts practitioner in Perth, Bunbury & Fremantle. David has been acknowledged with nominations for both Best Design as well as Best Newcomer at the Performing Arts WA Awards, as well as receiving awards from Perth Fringe Festival, WA Screen Awards, The Blue Room Theatre Award and the Museums & Galleries National Awards. He has continued to facilitate sound design workshops and other collaborations with young people, whilst expanding his arts practice to include video installation, feature film, documentary, street festivals and museum exhibitions, as well as a broad range of theatrical productions from independent theatre to Perth Festival showcases. He currently resides in Fremantle and moonlights in Senior School Engagement Programs.
