You see the big ships sitting out in Gage Roads and then entering Freo’s inner harbour. Some are huge, like the cruise ship Ovation of the Seas, and some are smaller, like the research vessel RV Sonne. In all cases a pilot from Fremantle Pilots guides them into and out of the harbour. Captain Greg Tonnison here tells the story of how pilots come to be pilots, what pilots do, and how they do it, right down to clambering over the barbed wire on board some ships used to fend off pirates in the Indian Ocean. FSN was lucky enough to be invited on board the Berkely recently as the Fremantle Pilots went about their work, and the accompanying photographs tell their own story of a day in the life of a pilot!
