Slow Stitching Journeys – On Now!

Slow Stitching Journeys by local textile artist, Ali Biddiscombe is open now at Amanti Cafe at the corner of South Terrace and Price Street, Fremantle. It’s Ali’s first solo exhibition of her works.

Over the past two years Ali has developed her own style in this stitching medium she calls slow stitching and has created all the pieces in this exhibition by hand.

Her individual textile signature uses mostly reused and repurposed fabrics and notions and is influenced by traditional embroidery, sashiko stitching and the Japanese art of Boro.

It began in 2023 with a road trip across Australia, a shoe box of fabric scraps, threads, accessories and a gifted boo –  Inchies edited by Peggy Donda-Kobert.

Our Bucket List Road Trip is an interpretation of Ali’s photos which she interpreted into the small fabric stories on display.

This recording of special memories is also visible in her trip to Germany, England and Denmark in a stitchedjournal of words from each day of the trip.

Over the past two years the larger, framed pieces in this exhibition have been created. They are a tribute to the beauty of Japanese art and culture, a love of colour, indigenous stories, gardens, rainbows and childhood memories.

Ali collected embroidery hoops and smaller frames which influenced the creation of the three smaller textile collections.Freo Icons celebrates her love of living in the Fremantle area for nearly over 30 years.

The Vintage Getaway Series is influenced by childhood and family holidays and features beach huts, VWs and caravans.

The third set sees Ali Playing With Stitches and smaller works of framed art; a nod toJapanese culture and Inchies themes.

In previous years Ali also helped coordinate the Agnes Street (Beaconsfield) Airing of Quilts which ran biannually for several years, celebrating community quilting and arts. She continues to be involved in several community sewing projects and quilting and stitching groups.

Slow Stitching Journeys runs at the wonderful Amanti Café on the corner of South Terrace and Price Street Fremantle from September 20 – October 19 2025 during café opening hours. Special thanks to owner Louise and her team for engaging and encouraging local artists to display their art to the community in this beautiful space where we hope you will come to enjoy some time out and a coffee.
