It’s Always Been Always

Friday, 2 May saw the launch of It’s Always Been Always at Fremantle Arts Centre.

The exhibition, curated by Zali Morgan, centres on the voices of Blak women, featuring both humorous and devastating stories celebrating Country, culture, and connection.

After heartfelt speeches by the artists, Jazz Money read her poetry to a rapt crowd in the courtyard.

Inside, accounts of the ongoing harm caused by nuclear testing at Maralinga are depicted on paper, on a suitcase, on crockery, reinforcing the impact it continues to have by utilising unorthodox canvases.

In another room, a proud parent beautifully captures a tender moment.

And in another, unscripted documentary Nightfishing With Ancestors by Karrabing Film Collective explores culture and what life could have been like if Europeans never arrived on Australian shores and local tribes were able to continue trading knowledge, stories, and resources with the Macassans who sailed there from Indonesia during the 1700s.

Much to reflect on.

It’s Always Been Always runs from 3 May to 3 August 2025
