Gerry MacGill and Lindsay Lovering from the NCFA – the North Fremantle Community Association – have deplored the mindless vandalism of the North Fremantle War Memorial with the recent removal of the Unknown Soldier’s rifle, as we reported in our Freo Today feature, C’mon, show your good side.
Gerry and Lindsay make the point that the memorial ‘is to young soldiers who died in two world wars to protect a western civilisation threatened by dictators consumed by their imperial ambitions.’ They ask does that ‘Sound familiar? Who will we rely on next time round?’
The NFCA has been in touch with the City of Fremantle concerning the memorial’s replacement. Given its vulnerability to damage, they have proposed that it be replaced in bronze, to thwart the vandals but also to demonstrate our community’s gratitude to our youth who died for us. They believe this is a project that would receive wide support and could be funded by public subscription.
Not a bad idea.

We look forward to learning of the City’s response.
