What is Fremantle Shipping News doing making a podcast with a candidate for the State seat of Cottesloe at the upcoming State elections on 8 March, one hears you ask?
Well, because Cottesloe ain’t just Cottesloe but parts of City Beach, Mt Claremont, Claremont, Swanbourne, Peppie Grove, Cott, Mossie Park, and North Fremantle, as well.
And North Freo, including Leighton Beach, is within the City boundaries of Freo.
Cottesloe has been held by the Liberal Party’s David Honey since 2018, but this time round, Sandra Brewer has won the Libs preselection for the seat. Sandra’s probably the bookies’ hot tip to win Cott, a traditionally safe Blue seat, but late last year a Voices4Cottesloe candidate, Dr Rachel Horncastle emerged from left stage to challenge the status quo.
On her campaign website Rachel Horncastle says – ‘I have lived in the Cottesloe electorate for 30 years and raised my family here – this is my home. It has been a great privilege to work as a local family doctor for 25 years. I care very much about my community and our beautiful environment.’
The Editor of Fremantle Shipping, Michael Barker, was pleased to catch up with Rachel Horncastle yesterday to make this podcast and discover more about her Voices4Cott campaign, what has led her to stand for Parliament, and what are the issues that motivate her as an independent community candidate.
