A while back, it struck the authors of Freo Groove, Bill Lawrie and Claire Moodie – who also perform together as the Folk duo Sea Swallow – that while there is plenty of top shelf song writing and performing talent in and around Freo and Perth, opportunities to see and hear the many great writers and performers are usually associated with pubs and late nights. And that such venues are often not great listening environments.
Bill and Claire’s book Freo Groove was about the connection between musicians, and their art, to the community of Fremantle, which has been such a fertile field for creative musicians for so long. In that spirit, they decided to present a series of Freo Groove morning concerts aimed at giving some of our best singers, songwriters (and poets) a chance to play for a listening audience, to get paid properly, and to give the audience a chance to really connect with great performances in an interesting venue, alcohol free and in a late Sunday morning time slot.
And the upcoming Coffee & Lyrics series is the result with the first event on Sunday, 6 October 2024.
The concerts are not long drawn out events – Sea Swallow will warm up the room from 10.30 for a few songs, while the audience gets coffee from the barista, and settles in. Then after brief introductions, it is over to the featured performers. There is a half hour first set, a brief intermission, then the guest poet reads for ten minutes, and then back to the guest performers for another half hour set. It is all about connecting with the music and the lyrics, and being in the moment. So phones off. The show will wind up about 12.15. For Bill and Claire, hopefully, this will all add up to an inspirational morning that people can take with them into the rest of Sunday!
As we say, the very first Coffee & Lyrics event happens on 6 October. The line up is the award winning The Little Lord Street Duo as the feature musical act, and the guest poet is, the also award winning, Natalie D Napoleon.
Oh, it all happens at the Hybrid Warehouse, 5b Quarry St Freo. Great venue.
Because numbers at the hybrid Hybrid Warehouse are limited, you’ll want to reserve your place and those of your friends super quickly.
