The saga of South Mole seems to be drawing to an end.
After being closed in March to all-comers following illegal camping on South Mole, then being reopened to foot and cycle traffic a while later, just over a month ago we brought you the breaking news that before long Fremantle Ports would finally reopen South Mole to vehicular traffic.
At that time, Freo Ports didn’t set a date for the reopening to vehicular traffic, but said vehicles would be allowed back once a range of works were completed to prevent illegal camping on the mole. Freo Ports also advised then ‘that ongoing work with Wilson Parking to install signage and parking meters to facilitate reopening has commenced.’
Well, judging by the activity along the South Mole access road Fremantle Shipping News observed yesterday, it seems a lot of that work is close to completion.
Parking bays up and down the access road have been painted, as have areas where parking isn’t allowed. And there seems to have been work done on the toilet block too.
So, it seems we can expect an announcement from Freo Ports quite soon that South Mole is open once again to vehicle access. The South Mole saga will then be over!
