Anchors aweigh! Maritime Day is here again!
This family friendly celebration of all things maritime has become the largest event of its kind in Australia, and it’s not hard to see why – the day is chock-a-block with activities and demonstrations, on Victoria Quay, inside historic B Shed, and on the water.
There will be interesting shore displays, including a massive LNG tanker, vintage and classic vehicles, model ships, prime movers, surf lifesaving rescue and marine safety equipment.
You can take part in walking tours, free harbour boat rides and photography workshops. Photographers will be roaming the quay offering tips – you can even post your Instagram photos of the event and be in the running to win $200.
Go on board a tug boat, a river barge, or Fremantle Ports’ emergency response boat, and see these vessels first hand at close quarters. Or you may have always wanted to see the Sail Training ship Leeuwin up close – well this is your chance!
There is a multitude of activities for the kids too! Dress up in anything nautical or marine (mermaid, pirate, fish, sailor) for a prize! There’s even a dress-up parade at noon. Look out for the big costumed characters roaming the quay!
Join an art or craft workshop, or get your own art painted onto your face at the face painting stand. The older ones may like to take part in the Maritime Day quiz and win a laptop. You can pick up a copy of the quiz at Logistics Training stand.
Entertainment gets underway all day, by way of various school performances, an EVOL LNG Science Magic Show, marching bands, pipes and drums and fashion shows. The Border Force dogs demonstration is on at 1pm near O’Connor Landing.
Walk over to the B Shed to see Fremantle Ports’ photographic display of 120 years at Fremantle Port. There will be 40 information booths inside full to the gunwhales with maritime industry and careers information.
There is something for everyone at Maritime Day, so shake a leg and get on down to Victoria Quay on Saturday, for the maritime event of the year!
