FREO TODAY

Freo Today. 22 October 2026. A beautiful, reflective day. If you were on the Sealink ferry to Rotto at 9 am this morning you will have seen and wondered just what this vessel was as you were obliged to sit and wait for her to pass you! Well, she’s the relatively new Liberian-flag multi-purpose cargo ship QANUX BENEFIT that was arriving from Dampier. The 123 m vessel, built in 2025 and operated by Wisdom Marine, is now berthed at North Quay before continuing to Singapore. Before that, she sailed down from Jinhae, South Korea, and had previously called at Chinese ports. So many stories to tell, ships! Welcome to Freo, QB! Nice pic by Suzanne Corcoran.

At around 4 pm yesterday, Crown Princess departed Freo, having arrived around 6 am in the morning. Creatures and critters take centre stage in Hungerford Award winning manuscript

Greg Taylor has won the 35th Hungerford Award for Wildlife in the Open Eucalyptus Forests.  Written from the viewpoint of 24 species – none of which are human – this collection of narrative non-fiction essays is an invitation to see the world from a different perspective. Greg Taylor After growing up in Miami and living in San Francisco, Greg came to live in Perth after a Goldilocks moment in which he found Melbourne too cold and Brisbane too humid. He is an ecologist and a passionate birder who has stalked fairy-wrens at the foot of the Great Dividing Range, captured black-legged kittiwakes atop an abandoned radio tower on an island off the coast of Alaska and chased Caspian terns from the ocean to the desert.  It’s…
