CY being de-corroded

Freo Today. 24 October 2025. What’s happening with CY? Looks like the much revered statue of CY O’Connor at the entrance to Victoria Quay and near the Fremantle Ports Building is being readied for liftoff. But no, CY is simply being de-corroded. As Roel Loopers reported in Freo View earlier this week, the statue will undergo a careful cleaning and inspection process, involving renowned conservation scientist Dr Ian MacLeod and led by Civil Infrastructure Maintenance Supervisor Andy Bentley. Dr MacLeod explained to Roel that “Although bronzes are very corrosion resistant, the combination of salt and wind creates an aggressive environment for the metal. It gradually succumbs to the decay process of converting metal back into the parent minerals from which the metals were refined.” Can’t wait to see the result!
