Not One IOTA, But Two

Two Freo Artists are off to India for IOTA27

The Indian Ocean Craft Triennial IOTA27 returns in 2027 with eight WA artists off to India, two of whom are from arty Freo – Maxxi Minaxi May and Bjoern Rainer-Adamson. Congratulations!

Following the success of IOTA21 and IOTA24, Planning is now well underway for IOTA27, with the organisation continuing to expand its international collaborations and cultural exchange. These exchanges form a key part of IOTA’s development program

Leading into IOTA27, enabling artists to build international networks, expand their practice through material experimentation, and contribute to ambitious new work is the name of the game. You will find FSN’s coverage of IOTA 2024 right here.

Next year’s theme is: When you look at the ocean, you see the sky. Which IOTA explains in these words – ‘When you look deeply at one element, you encounter another. This in-between space mirrors the world of craft: a threshold between tradition and innovation, body and spirit, local knowledge and global exchange.’

Executive Director Carola Akindele-Obe said: “These exchanges are about more than travel — they are about building meaningful, long-term relationships between artists, communities and cultures across the Indian Ocean region. Through shared making and knowledge exchange, artists expect to gain new perspectives that will resonate in their work and in the experiences, we offer audiences in Western Australia.”

Eight Australian Artists – seven from The West – have been selected and will travel to India in October 2026. They are: Tarryn Gill – Perth; Lily-Mae Kerley – Geraldton; Jenna Lee – Melbourne; Maxxi Minaxi May – Fremantle; Monique Tippett – Dwellingup; Mike Bullock –  Attadale; Michael Barlow – Wembley Downs; Bjoern Rainer-Adamson – Fremantle.

Their exchanges will form a key part of IOTA’s development program.

We look forward to covering IOTA 2027.
