Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy – Film Review

Our Gayle O’Leary* just attended the “Galentine’s” Luna Cinemas advance screening of Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy and she absolutely had to write about it. Here’s her review.

Dear Diary,

I hereby declare this marvellous, joyful, and heart-wrenching film to be worthy of nine stars.

Am absolutely not biased from nearly thirty years of watching Jones on and off every Christmas.

Bec and I marched into Luna SX on Wednesday 12 February under the full moon, glass of bubbly and choc bomb in hand, then nestled down to a wonderful evening of nostalgia and belly-aching laugher amid a full theatre. V pleasing to see gents in the room, too.

Bridget, now approaching her fifties with two young children in a cosy Hampstead tenement, is once again stuck shrugging her way through the company of the “smug-marrieds” and navigating all the oppressive, hypocritical “f—wittage” society still likes to throw at mothers and women “of a certain age”.

Her stasis is interrupted, however, after a handsome young stranger helps her realise perhaps she’s not out of her tree. You’ll have to watch the movie to see what I mean.

Was absolutely thrilled to see the entire original cast join two-time Academy Award winner Renée Zellweger, albeit bittersweet in the case of Colin Firth as a memory only. Hugh Grant remains sinfully charming with the salt and pepper, curse him.

They are joined by gorgeous new love interests, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Leo Woodall. Ding dong.

Top-notch dancing, lip-synched karaoke, and spectacular British scenery make this feel ever more wholesome.

What a lovely treat. I didn’t expect it to be such a good homage to the first film.

And now I’m off to Bedfordshire.

So, 9/10 Stars!
