Desperate Measures – Relive the 70s and 80s in Freo!

Gayle O’Leary reports on a good night out at the Opening of Desperate Measures at FAC

This is the exhibition at Fremantle Arts Centre that spurred me to go out on Friday night and soak up the spirit of culture and community activism, while soaking up spirits, naturally.

“Desperate Measures: 1977 -1985” chronicles a pivotal moment in Fremantle’s history while it enjoyed a renaissance from the America’s Cup Race and faced the question of nuclear submarines, militarism, and growing environmental concern.

Sound familiar?

Jo Darbyshire has curated a great collection of art, photographs, texts, and even Tokyo Rose shirts for the crowds to ponder over. It was a treat to also see a few passionate and locally famous stirrer-uppers present in the room, but I won’t name names. You just had to be at the opening!

Hopefully you can make it soon to the exhibition that runs from now right through to 27 January 2025, and reflect on the contemporary parallels of these pivotal times in our port city.

You might also like to get to the Curators Tour on 17 November at 12.30 pm. It’ll well be worth the effort.
