Not since the Rajneeshees way back in the 80s, have so many brightly coloured and happy looking people looking for fun, friendship and frivolity been seen here, there and everywhere around Fremantle.
You’d be forgiven for thinking they were an Occupy Freo group wanting to challenge the 1 percenters. Or perhaps an advance party who’d arrived early in Freo to cheer on the Dockers AFLW team in their finals match v Essendon at Fremantle Oval this afternoon. But no, they are Red Hatters.
For the past week, a Convention of Red Hatters has led to a swelling of red and purple attired women all around Freo. The red hat is the giveaway. But so too the purple.
But just what are Red Hatters and what are all these conventioneers doing in Freo exactly? And what’s their mission in life? And from where to they hale?
Turns out it’s the 21st anniversary of Red Hatters WA. And the ladies, only ladies, like a good time. ‘Fun, friendship and frivolity’ is indeed their motto.
Our Editor, Michael Barker, was lucky enough to catch up with the Convention organiser, Liane Satie, at the Esplanade Hotel, Fremantle, just ahead of the Red Hatters Gala Convention Dinner on Saturday night, and to make this podcast about the Red Hatters.
If you’d like to join a Red (or Pink) Hatters group in Western Australia, contact the WA Red Hatters through their homepage right here.
In the meantime, enjoy the podcast.
