We first brought to our readers attention the development application to build what we dubbed the ‘Sussex Hotel’, at the corner of South Terrace and Suffolk Street, Fremantle, in February 2021.
The development was approved under what we termed the ‘Covid planning law’ in July 2021. Under the conditions of the approval, the development had to be ‘substantially commenced’ by 4 February 2023. When that was going to happen the developer sought and obtained approval to extend the time for substantial commencement.
We then brought you the news in February 2023, that the substantial commencement date had been officially moved to 4 August 2024.
Well, that date has also come and gone, and as you can see from this pic taken Tuesday this week, there’s no development evident on the site, substantial or otherwise.
We assume the proposed hotel development is dead as.
What happens next, we wonder?
We also wonder how many approvals of major projects approved under the Covid planning law have actually been substantially commenced.
