What comes next after the failed Referendum? Public lecture by Dr Bertus de Villiers

You are invited by Soroptimists International Fremantle to a public lecture at 6.30-7.30 pm on Monday 9 September 2024, at Walyalup Civic Centre, Fremantle, addressing the question of Life after the failed Voice: Options for Aboriginal self-determination and consultation by Dr Bertus de Villiers.

Dr de Villiers, who is a member of the State Administrative Tribunal of WA and an Adjunct Professor at the Curtin University Law School, is an internationally recognised expert in the field of indigenous rights. He worked for over 6 years in the Goldfields of Western Australia as a legal representative for Aboriginal groups and has published extensively on indigenous rights in Australia and overseas.

In this presentation, Dr de Villiers will reflect on options for engagement with Aboriginal people in the aftermath of the Voice referendum. He will speak about progress made in native title; indigenous land use agreements; the possibility of state-based consultative bodies; and national consultative options.

His presentation will be against the background of international experiences of countries dealing with the recognition of indigenous rights, a topic he has covered in his recently published book, Indigenous Rights in the Modern Era (Brill: Leiden, 2024).

The upcoming lecture is open to the public, but you are encouraged to RSVP to roseant@ozemail.com.au as soon as possible for catering and seating purposes.
