The Fremantle Shipping News was pleased to attend the launch of IOTA24 – the Indian Ocean Craft Triennial 2024 – at Fremantle’s Maritime Museum on Saturday 1 June.
While a large container ship was quietly slipping out of the inner harbour bound for Singapore, Freda Oglivie, a Whadjuk/Ballardong Elder, delivered a beautiful Welcome to Country followed by an expressive and dramatic musical composition by Pavan Hari and Shiva Kumar – you could have heard a pin drop.
This international exhibition will highlight work from artists and groups from six Indian Ocean countries – India, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, South Africa – as well as First Nations Australians and Australians of diverse heritages.
IOTA is a not-for-profit organisation based in Perth/Boorloo, which was set up in response to the phenomenal success of the inaugural event in 2021.
IOTA24 is proudly supported by major partners: Lotterywest, WA Department of Local Government, Sport & Cultural Industries and Founding Partner Curtin University.
The exciting event will run for 3 months, from August – October 2024 with 32 lead artists with over 70 exhibitions in a community-led festival program to the theme of ‘Codes in Parallel’, reflecting on craft as a universal language.
Over 300 WA craftspeople from Esperance to Broome have been planning for the event for 2 years.
There will be exhibitions at Fremantle Arts Centre, John Curtin Gallery, Yagan Mia Wireless Hill Park and Holmes a Court Gallery.
Rural exhibitions will take place in Albany, Bunbury, Rockingham, Mandurah and Margaret River, to mention a few.
The event is expected to attract 180,000 visitors over the 3-month period.
IOTA24 will be an extraordinary and vibrant event, inviting the wider community to participate and reflect on how craft can drive future benefits.
