Dear Editor,
Unfortunately, temporary campers have pushed the authorities too far which has lead to the closure of South Mole to the general public.
There are wider issues behind why there are so many people camping in public places.
In the old days they would stay at caravan parks. I note that Fremantle has several well used caravan parks providing facilities such as toilets and safe areas to stay.
Perhaps there needs to be more caravan parks suited to the van and rooftop tent brigade with basic facilities in an area which is not so high value?
If the cost is an issue then a temporary reduced cost would assist, supplemented by public funding. The alternative is still costly to local government with abuse of facilities and inappropriate use of beach and public carparks.
