Snaps rang me 10 minutes before bounce down, just after the Matildas had won the big game on penalties, to say he’d had a premonition about the result of the Derby and didn’t think it would be fair for him to attend and report on the game. He asked if I could fill in for him. Without pausing, he added he had drawn out half his retirement fund and, based on what he now knew, was heading straight to the TAB to get good odds on a Dockers win by more than 100 points. I agreed to fill in for him on the condition he shared the take. I believe he agreed.
Apart from that fact and the fact that 51,000 mainly Eagles fans turned up to watch the demolition, there’s not much else to report.
In short, tomorrow’s headlines read –
NO BIFFO, NO HEART, NO CONTEST, NO EAGLES – ADAM SIMPSON HANDS IN BADGE AFTER DERBY 57
However, it would be remiss of me not to mention it was also Brennan Cox’s 100th game and he played a beauty. As did Luke Jackson, Jordy Clark, Caleb Serong and all the other boys in white with a slash of purple.
But it was Shooters big night out and he deservedly took home the Glendinning Allan Medal for BOG.
The other notable event of the night was the 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17 sequence.
In the result, the home team scored 4.9 33 to the Dockers mammoth 20.14 134.
It was the biggest Freo Derby win ever.
So, no grumbles from me tonight, save to say it was a tad annoying we let the Eagles in for their last two goals and we didn’t boot 20 unanswered majors.
