Demolition of the former Challenger TAFE site in Beaconsfield is nearing completion and the State Government has just opened public consultation to help guide the future development.
The Minister for Housing; Lands; Homelessness; Local Government, John Carey, says the demolition, which kicked off in April of this year, is an important step in making land available for a modern mixed-use development, aimed at revitalising the Beaconsfield area.
It is expected the new development on the 3.8 hectare site will include a range of affordable and social housing options, as well as community facilities, public open spaces and commercial premises such as restaurants and cafes.
The planning documents released as part of the public consultation process confirm that the project seeks to build on the outcomes of the City of Fremantle’s earlier The Heart of Beaconsfield Masterplan consultations, of which the Challenger TAFE site formed part.
Public comment on the TAFE site component is particularly sought on housing and building design, sustainability, landscaping, public space, community facilities and access (including public transport, cycling, pedestrian, cars) – all identified as important.
The Minister says the outcomes of this first phase of consultation will help guide the development of a concept design and the preparation of the local structure plan. These documents will set out the way the land is to be used and developed.
DevelopmentWA has also commenced planning for the redevelopment of the site, including an application to rezone the site to “Urban” under the Metropolitan Region Scheme, and is working in close collaboration with the City of Fremantle and the Department of Communities.
The Minister also indicated that, in addition to the release of land, including the redevelopment of the Beaconsfield TAFE site, the State Government is investing $2.4 billion in social housing and homelessness measures, including the delivery of 3,300 new social housing dwellings over four years across metropolitan and regional WA.
