Workshop Freo and Kraken

By Maria Wilson

Last Saturday at the art precinct Bathers Beach, an exciting collaboration of artists came together to help celebrate the opening of ‘Workshop Freo’.

Workshop was founded in 2013 by creative crusaders Chet Garcia and Mat Branagan. Originally situated in one location in Sydney, they have expanded to include Melbourne, Brisbane, Northern Rivers and Adelaide. The guys now have their sights set on WA.

Chet and Mat describe Workshop as
“A place to be inspired and unleash your inner awesome.”

Their events are colourful, fun, super entertaining and interactive for those who like to get involved.

In amongst music, stalls, food trucks and chill camps, there was everything from ping pong, Giant Jenga and live painting to ‘Coral and Cactus’ yarn bombing the oceanfront.

This fantastical afternoon was brought to a close by the folks of Blazing Swan, who ignited the night with Kraken A Midwinter’s Blaze.

‘Kraken’ is a legendary sea monster of giant size that is said to dwell off the coasts of Norway and Greenland.

Thousands of people, of all ages, came out, many in outrageously flamboyant costumes, to feel the warmth of the fire on Bathers Beach and to celebrate this wonderful port city of Freo. May there be many more events like this. I loved it!
