The Ionikos arrives in Freo on World Ocean Day

Freo Today. World Oceans Day. 8 June 2023. And here’s the Ionikos, with the Svitzer tug Redhead in her gentle wake, as she sails into Fremantle’s inner harbour this morning around 7.45 am. A lovely sight. She’s in from Singapore. The Ionikos sails under the flag of Liberia, a flag of convenience. Her name? Well, you’ll find it’s shared by a football club and a basketball club and some other sporting clubs too no doubt based in Nikaia, near the Port of Piraeus, Greece. The name derives from Ionia, the birthplace of many of the residents of Nikaia, who arrived there as refugees after the Asia Minor Disaster soon after World War 1.
