Porcelli the Sculptor

FREO TODAY

Freo Today. 12 April 2022. Pietro Giacomo Porcelli stands, with a lovely smile on his face, every day, whatever the weather, at the north-west corner of Walyalup Koort, central Fremantle. The great artist, who was born in Italy in 1872 and died here in The West in 1943, was a Sculptor of note. His well known monuments around Freo stand to the memories of W E Marmion, C Y O’Connor and Maitland-Brown. While a monument to the memory of the Noongar warrior Yagan now stands in Yagan Square central Perth, we don’t yet have such a monument to the memory of any of the forebears of our Whadjuk People here in Freo. One day perhaps. It almost goes without saying that Porcelli’s monument was sculpted by noted living Freo sculptor, Greg James, whose significant works are also to be found at important locations around Freo.
