The Wednesday Poem

Fremantle Shipping News is pleased to bring you The Wednesday Poem.

In this feature we post poems by Freo and Freo-connected poets and those who may not call themselves poets but love writing poetry or having a go!

Today, we are pleased to bring you Do Not Sleep Beside a River by Cyndie Innes.

Do Not Sleep Beside a River

When the wind is still, the river is slick, fat and smooth
Round bellied at high tide
But tonight the wind moans across her making foam
Sending froth to lick my face.

At night she is jet black and limp
Creatures die in her unseen
She parts her waters, then devours
That gentle oil slick, those leaves floating by.

That rubber dingy does not know her secret
Birds alight on her firm belly
But not our children
They slide in leaving no trace.
