A JDAP today approved the Art Hotel proposed by Fiveight on the Old Spicers Site in central Freo.
In late June, we brought you news of the hotel proposal by the proponent Fiveight, a company wholly owned by Tattarang and associated with Andrew and Nicole Forrest and the Minderoo Foundation.
The City of Fremantle had expressed its opposition to the height of the building, but JDAP has ruled otherwise.
Fiveight spokesman John Meredith said this afternoon:
“Fiveight welcomes the decision of the Joint Development Assessment Panel (JDAP), which has conditionally approved the Development Application for a premium lifestyle hotel on the site of the former Spicers Building in the heart of Fremantle.
“This positive outcome for Fremantle has been received following endorsement from the City of Fremantle’s Design Advisory Committee and Officers and is the result of a collaborative and open approach with the City of Fremantle. We would like to thank the Mayor, Councillors and City officials for their vision and reasonable approach to appropriate due process. As part of the approval process, we prepared a detailed Heritage Impact Statement that was supported by the Heritage Council of Western Australia (subject to conditions) and endorsed by the City of Fremantle Heritage Team.
“We would like to acknowledge the iconic design work of Smart Design Studio as lead architects of the scheme, which deservedly was commended through the statutory approval process.
“The approved proposal will transform the well-known site into a destination hotel designed to sit comfortably alongside Fremantle’s historic architecture and existing public spaces. It will deliver Fremantle residents and visitors a landmark building that brings people together and offers new opportunities for culture, commerce and the arts to flourish.
“Construction will commence next year.”
More to come later.
