The Future of Fremantle project is a huge project, from the Port to Leighton Beach, one that will reconfigure the way much of the City of Fremantle operates for the next century.
If you’d like to digest that observation you can’t do better than take in the articles penned by a variety of knowledgeable Freo folk about the Future of Fremantle challenges right here on FSN.
The latest is the desire of land developers to push on without delay with getting land rezoned and developed. But not all Freo folk are easy with this demand.
For example, here’s what Paul Gamblin of the Leighton Action Coalition submitted to the City of Fremantle at the Ordinary Meeting of Council of 27 August last.

The MRS Amendment 1400/41 report identifies the following matters which are to
be addressed as part of a request for Lifting of the Urban Deferment and to be
resolved prior to transferring the Precinct to the ‘Urban’ zone:
1. Finalisation or substantial progression of the Future of Fremantle project.
2. Confirmation of regional road and transport requirements in the locality.
3. Confirmation of coastal foreshore reserve requirements.
4. Consideration of the Fremantle Port Buffer.
Apart from anything else, it seems public comment is stymied because so many materials are considered by the developers to be ‘Confidential’, as this excerpt from the Council agenda for 27 August shows –

All this has the Leighton Action Coalition on the move again, particularly asking its supporters to write letters expressing their concern at the unseemly haste that the Future of Fremantle project seems to be attended with just now.

No doubt questions will be directed to the candidates on this topic at Monday night’s Great Mayoral Debate!
